Itinerary Details:

Day 1

Welcome to Santo Domingo, the oldest city in the western hemisphere! After checking into our historic hotel in the heart of the Colonial Zone, we will start our adventure with a bang with a walking tour of the area.  La Zona Colonial is a World Heritage Site which boasts many firsts: the first cathedral in the new world, the first paved street, the remains of the first hospital, etc. This historic neighborhood consists of a pedestrian-friendly maze of narrow streets brimming with 16th to early 20th century architectural wonders. We will end with a welcome dinner at one of the many wonderful restaurants in the area.

Meals Included: D

Day 2

Day two will bring a unique opportunity to tour the Dominican National Palace. Neoclassical in style and designed by Italian architect Guido D’Alessandro, the National Palace was built to mark the 100th year celebration of Dominican Independence.  We’ll leave the National Palace and head to El Faro a Colón (Columbus’ Lighthouse), final resting place of Christopher Columbus.  After a leisurely tour of this tomb-museum, we will go visit the nearby caves of Los Tres Ojos, which houses a series of three lakes.  A natural heaven in the bustling city.

Meals Included: B, L

Day 3

We will leave the hustle and bustle of the city for the mountain retreat of Jarabacoa. Located in the verdant region of El Cibao, Jarabacoa is a small resort town full of natural beauty.  Enjoy the peace and quiet of our tv and phone free hotel and instead learn about the local butterfly population, enjoy a dip in the pool, walk the nature trail to the river and learn about the food cultivation practices of the region. We will end the cool mountain evening making smores by a camp fire. (Additional exciting adventures such as horseback riding to waterfalls, white-water rafting, trekking and canyoning are available, fees apply.)

Meals Included: B, L, D

Day 4

Santiago, the cultural capital of the Dominican Republic awaits! On our tour of Santiago we will visit The Leon Jimenez Cultural Center and dig into the history of the Dominican Republic through its art!  We will also visit The Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration. We will hike its iconic marble tower to enjoy the breathtaking views of the city from the top.

Santiago is known as the cigar center of the world!  A visit to Santiago would not be complete without a stop at one of its cigar factories.  View the process of making these fine cigars, sample and buy them, if that is your wish. Then drive on to the lovely seaside town of Caberete and enjoy our resort on the beach.

Meals Included: B, L

Day 5

By now you are ready for some relaxation.  Enjoy this free day to re-energize. Sleep in, enjoy some spa services, take long walks on the beach, you deserve it!

Meals Included: B

Day 6

Enjoy a full-day tour of the city of Puerto Plata. Ride a cable car to the top of the Mount Isabela for gorgeous panoramic views of the city and the sea! Visit the Brugal Rum distillery and learn about the company’s history, taste the rum and if you like it, buy it at the souvenir shop.  Also visit the amber museum and walk on the centuries old fortress of San Felipe.

Meals Included: B, L

Day 7

Morning drive to the lovely Samaná Peninsula! Enjoy awesome panoramic views from over 1,000 feet (300 meters) above the bay and see the different fruits and nuts that grow here in the tropics. After a yummy lunch, group members will have the opportunity of participating in an optional service project.  (to be determined) Those who do not wish to participate will be free to explore the town or enjoy the hotel the rest of the day.

Meals Included: B, L

Day 8

Greet the morning with a boat ride to Los Haítises National Park. Preserved since 1976, Los Haitises is home to rainforest, mangroves of varying species, over 200 species of birds (it’s a key bird-nesting site and sanctuary), multiple caves, and some of the highest numbers of Taíno petroglyphs and pictographs in the country. We might even catch a glimpse of the many manatees and dolphins that visit the park’s waters regularly.  Meals Included: B, L, D
